The tropical inverse problem and toric varieties

The tropical inverse problem asks which (combinatorial) tropical varieties are the tropicalization of subvarieties of a torus (or more generally of subvarieties of a given variety). I will discuss a weaker version of this problem when we have the additional data of fixed toric variety. This has applications to birational geometry.
