Research interest of Hannah Markwig

In algebraic geometry, we study solution sets of polynomial equations, so-called varieties. Geometric properties of these varieties as for example dimension can be described using the algebraic properties of the equations. Algebraic geometry is a broad field of mathematics that has many applications and many connections to other fields of mathematics.

In tropical geometry, algebraic varieties are replaced by piece-wise linear objects called tropical varieties. Tropical varieties can be studied using combinatorial methods. Results that are proved for tropical varieties allow conclusions for algebraic varieties. For example, results in enumerative geometry have been derived using tropical geometry. Tropical geometry connects algebraic geometry and combinatorics. In addition, it can be applied to different fields as for example biomathematics.
